| Welcome to biltongbox.co.nz, a one-stop shop for all biltong lovers in New Zealand,
and home to the BiltongBox biltong dryer. The word "biltong" is derived from the Dutch bil ("rump")
and tong ("strip" or "tongue") and is basically cured meat. It is made from raw fillets of beef or
venison and cut into strips following the grain of the muscle.

As most South Africans living in New Zealand, we enjoy the taste of
biltong. In fact, most of our New Zealand friends love it too! Whenever we have people
over, the biltong bowls are always the first of the snack bowls to be empty.
When we first came to New Zealand, we used to buy our biltong from local butchers. Some butchers were
South African and others had simply learnt how to make biltong themselves. However, biltong
from the local butcher has now become too expensive (currently
in the region of around $45 per kilo) and - since we easily devour around 2kg every
week - you'd agree that buying biltong from our local butcher is becoming an expensive excercise! Cutting down on our
biltong consumption was never an option, so we had to come up with another idea - and this is how BiltongBox, and this
web site has come about.
We now make our own biltong and chilli bites at a fraction of the cost of the local butcher's biltong
and - to add insult to injury - people say that our biltong tastes better! Our cost per kilo is around $18 and is
an astonishing 60% less than the local butcher's price, so it's well worth it!

Now you can also enjoy the savings by making your own biltong with great ease. Thanks to the BiltongBox,
you could be enjoying your own biltong by the end of the week!
